Background of the Study

Chronic sinusitis, a prolonged inflammation of the sinuses, is a common condition that can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. It often results in symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, and headaches, which can persist for months or even years if not properly managed (Mohammed et al., 2024). Effective management of chronic sinusitis requires a multifaceted approach that includes medication, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgical intervention (Adamu et al., 2023). Nurses are integral to the management of chronic sinusitis, especially in ensuring patient adherence to treatment plans, providing education on symptom management, and monitoring for complications (Yusuf et al., 2024).

In Benue State, where healthcare access can be limited, the role of nurses becomes even more crucial. They are often responsible for educating patients about the importance of medication adherence, the use of saline nasal sprays, and other home management strategies (Suleiman et al., 2023). However, there is limited research on the specific role of nurses in the management of chronic sinusitis within Benue State’s healthcare settings. This study seeks to evaluate nurses’ involvement in managing chronic sinusitis and to identify challenges they may face in providing effective care.

Statement of the Problem

Chronic sinusitis is a widespread condition that can significantly affect patient well-being, yet many patients do not receive adequate education or support for managing their condition. Nurses play a critical role in educating patients and ensuring that they adhere to prescribed treatments. However, in Benue State, limited research exists on the role nurses play in managing chronic sinusitis, leaving a gap in understanding their contribution to patient care and the challenges they face.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of nurses in managing chronic sinusitis patients in Benue State hospitals.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of nurses’ educational interventions in improving the management of chronic sinusitis.
  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in managing chronic sinusitis patients in Benue State hospitals.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of nurses in managing chronic sinusitis patients in Benue State hospitals?
  2. How effective are nurses' educational interventions in improving patient adherence to treatment plans for chronic sinusitis?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing chronic sinusitis patients in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses’ educational interventions significantly improve patient adherence to treatment for chronic sinusitis.
  2. There is a positive correlation between nurses’ involvement in chronic sinusitis management and improved patient outcomes.
  3. Barriers such as insufficient training and resources hinder nurses’ ability to manage chronic sinusitis effectively in Benue State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in hospitals in Benue State, specifically evaluating their role in managing chronic sinusitis. Limitations may include challenges in access to medical records and variations in the availability of treatment options across different healthcare facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Chronic Sinusitis: A long-lasting inflammation of the sinuses, typically lasting more than 12 weeks, with symptoms including nasal congestion, facial pain, and headaches.
  • Nurses' Educational Interventions: Efforts by nurses to teach patients about managing their condition, including medication adherence, lifestyle changes, and recognizing complications.
  • Treatment Adherence: The extent to which patients follow prescribed treatment regimens, including medication use and recommended lifestyle changes.
